Licensed outfitters and guide companies short on staff for a big trip can find available freelance guides in their area and book them for specific dates. Guides post availability, certs and day rates. Shoulder Season matches — we are not a staffing agency or employer of record.
How legality usually works. For the trip, the freelance guide typically works under the hiring outfitter’s permit, insurance and supervision. The outfitter is responsible for permit compliance, adding the guide to its roster / insurance as required, and following state rules. Example: Colorado Parks & Wildlife states that all river guides must work for a licensed outfitter (CPW River Outfitter License; C.R.S. § 33-32-106). Utah commercial boating / outfitting registration similarly puts duties on the licensed outfitting company (Utah commercial boating). This is not legal advice — confirm with your counsel and insurer before hiring.
Employment classification (honest flag). In many cases the hiring outfitter must treat a “rented” guide as a temporary W-2 employee or day-hire under its own policies and workers’ comp / liability insurance — or structure a true independent subcontract only if its counsel and insurer agree. Shoulder Season is a matching / bookings marketplace only. We do not employ the guide, do not supervise the trip, and are not an employer of record or PEOs. Flag for lawyer review before paid matching goes live.
For outfitters
Post a need: activity, region/river/trail, dates, how many guides, required certs (WFR, swiftwater, AIARE, PMBIA…), day rate offered.
When booking is live: 15% booking fee taken from the guide’s day rate (same marketplace model as traveler bookings), paid via Stripe. Shown before anyone pays.
Outfitters — post a need
Tell us what you’re short on. Free to post while matching is in interest-list mode.
Guides — post availability
Outfitters browse for date-specific help. When a paid match books, the 15% fee comes from your day rate.
